Case Study: Sixth Form Composition Project

“I feel really lucky to have had the opportunity to learn from such talented professional musicians and I am very excited to compose music for them to play!”

Student Feedback

“In a year where our student musicians have sorely missed practical music opportunities, this project has really lifted their spirits and given focus to their learning as well as providing an amazing musical opportunity.”

Jo Hatton, Music Teacher, BHASVIC

It has been a real privilege to create a project to guide and encourage young talented composers as they feel their way, writing for a range of instruments including string quartet, clarinet, piano and percussion.

We have had to adapt our sessions over the last year, however with a combination of recorded material, zoom and live workshops our team have been able to demonstrate the ‘do’s’ and ‘don’ts’ of composition for their instruments and guide the students through the composition process and will finally perform the finished works later in April.

Participants: 26 Year 12 students from Brighton, Hove & Sussex Sixth Form College (BHASVIC)

Ensemble Reza Musicians: Andrew Thurgood (violin), Sarah Carvalho-Dubost (cello)

Additional Musicians: Steve Dummer (clarinet and piano), Toril Azzalini-Machecler (percussion).
